The Art of Creative Nonfiction: Summer College Essay Classes

A weekly summer intensive on the stages of writing a great personal essay, specifically tailored for rising high school seniors preparing for their college applications. Over 10 weeks, each class — containing a maximum of eight students — will read and analyze a variety of essays, written both by college applicants and by lauded writers, exploring different structures and styles. Students will learn how to brainstorm, draft, and edit both their own work and that of their classmates. Teachers provide personalized editing notes on students’ new drafts, specifically tailored to each writer’s stage in the process. Students can expect to finish the class with a polished draft of both their Common App essay and several supplements, as well as the skills and confidence to pursue their own work in the future.

Individualized Editing Sessions

Hourly editing sessions with a member of the Chromolo team. Our editor works closely with the student to guide them on the essay-writing process, from conception to the final draft, emphasizing and honing the writer’s specific voice and personality.

The individual sessions are specifically tailored to each student’s needs — from organizing submission deadlines to discussing storytelling structure to suggesting specific edits. Our focus is on making the writer’s own ideas and words shine, and on ensuring that each writer feels ownership, pride, and an honest sense of self by their final drafts.
